I love the thought that this sailboat found me! Rather than the other way around. I recite this to anyone who cares to listen. I had arrived in Sri Lanka on December 4, 2025 with the onset of the Northern Hempisphere's dreary winter in Portland Oregon. With retirement and adventure on my mind. I had taken up living with my girlfriend's apartment in the delightful town of Maharagama a few miles out of the Colombo. I had met Tissangani an year earlier and had made the commitment to sell my beloved 34' Sea Ray Sundancer Cabin Cruiser and my Chevy Truck and come live in Sri Lanka. After a few weeks of getting used to the tropical living and pottering around the apartment where I did start a vegetable garden in the balcony and glad to say the they are producing small quantities of edible food. I knew I was going to get a boat so I could get out on the water. I made inquires and found the Colombo Yacht Club on the Bolgoda Lake a 30 minute ride out. Now this place is set in a park like setting with a marina, a small floating dock and a rows of boats housed over the extensive property. A great open club house with bar facing the Lake, It has swimming pool and even has a couple of rooms for overnight rental. I decided I was going to join and become a member after being welcomed like a long lost brother by the Rear Commodore who promised to sign my membership application on the spot for approval at the next meeting. Such is the hospitality of the people on this wonderful island. I am fortunate to call home now. I set out to explore the row of boats in their cages in the blazing hot Sunday afternoon sunshine. On my way back to the clubhouse I pass by two guys working on the outboard motor of a sleek looking speedboat on a trailer. After nods of acknowledgement before I was out of range one the the gentleman called out a greeting and introduced himself. We stood there chatting a bit about the perils of keeping outboards serviced and reliable. I mentioned to him I was looking to acquire a small swing keel sailboat. Priya says he has just the same type of boat in his possession an he did not know what to do with it. Much later after several cold ones at the Club House had been consumed, girlfriends, wives had been informed that there was important boating matters that needed our immediate attention, we were off to see the Macgregor sailboat which was on its trailer in Priya's cousin's Biren's yard a 10 minute ride from the Yacht Club. After eyeball inspection, the boat was in pristine condition for one that had sat idle in a tropical warehouse for the past 10 years. The sails were in remarkable hardly used condition. All standing rigging neatly wrapped around the mast. Everything was there. I said I will take it! There is another chapter about getting the ownership transferred, obtaining seaworthy certificate, insurance inspections and registering the boat and trailer by Sri Lankan authorities. That best be left for discussion at the Club House during the monsoon rains possibly.
